The new Kununurra Courthouse was opened on 26 October 2014 by the Premier, Colin Barnett, the Attorney General, Michael Mischin, and the Minister for Regional Development, Terry Redman. The courthouse commenced operations on 3 November 2014.
The new $41.8 million courthouse, funded by the State Government’s Royalties for Regions programme, was delivered on time and on budget.
The courthouse includes a magistrates and a jury courtroom, facilities for mediation and pre-trial conferences and a remote witness room, which ensures vulnerable witnesses and children can testify without being in the courtroom. Other features include separate areas for jury deliberation, witnesses and victims of crime, interview rooms and modern security monitoring.
The design, colours and materials of the building itself were chosen to blend in with the local landscape and make the most of natural light and views outside wherever possible, and features the work of artists from the East Kimberley and beyond.
