Point of Interest

Aboriginal Services

The Department acknowledges and respects Aboriginal history and culture. This is reflected in its Reconciliation Action Plan 2012 - 2015 which provides strategies to increase Aboriginal employment and economic development opportunities. It also provides for involvement in activities such as NAIDOC celebrations, and engaging with Aboriginal people in justice-related initiatives.

Aboriginal Mediation Service

The Aboriginal Mediation Service provides culturally appropriate dispute resolution services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to assist in addressing conflict or disputes between individuals and/or groups, including families and communities.

Mediation through the Aboriginal Mediation Service requires all parties to commit to voluntarily participate in good faith.

Parties work towards resolving their dispute and attempt to reach outcomes that everyone can live with.

The service aims to assist people to resolve conflicts before they escalate into violence or result in court action. A professional mediator/s will help with the mediation process.

The service also provides community education workshops and information sessions to assist clients and referrers to more effectively deal with conflict across a range of settings, situations and environments.

If the service cannot assist in resolving a dispute, the service will make every attempt to provide information about appropriate agencies or support groups that may be able to assist.

This free service is provided by the Department of the Attorney General.

We can help with disputes involving:

  • Family
  • Neighbours
  • Communities
  • Funeral arrangements
  • Workplace.

Aboriginal Justice

The Department's major Aboriginal justice initiatives aim to:

  • create safe and sustainable communities
  • reduce the number of victims of crime, and
  • reduce the over-representation of Aboriginal people in the criminal justice system.

A highly-focused series of programs address specific targets including:

  • the loss of motor vehicle licences
  • a compounding of fine and infringement defaults
  • domestic violence.
